Chuck Another One Into the Twitter CRAP-Pile-ooza!
By Raymond Fong
Man… will the Twitter insanity ever stop?
I am starting to see more and more “Get 89,891,907 LOYAL Twitter Followers by Doing Absolutely Nothing!” programs floating around. There’s that ViralFollowers crap Which, by the way, is awfully similar to...» and then there’s Brad Callen’s (a guy I respect by the way) TwiveAway…
The concept of these two tools is, “RT this message, tell others to RT this software, and you’ll have tons of followers.
I am sure there are a ton more tools like these out there and a LOT more coming.
OMGWTFBBQ it’s gotta stop!
Think about the mentality of those folks who buy into software like these. These folks are the ones who have something they want to shout out to the world, and NOT interested in listening to what others have to say. These are the folks who think, “Woohhh, if I had 38 bazillion followers, I’ll have that many more folks to spam with my Tweets.“ They are NOT the type of folks who think, “Hmm, the folks I am following are those whom I genuinely care about and are interested in – I’ll pay attention to their Tweets.”
So when you have 89,098 followers (and end up following 89,997 Twitters) who have that same mentality, what do you get?
Nothing! These folks just contribute to Twitter becoming more and more of a “Shout Box”.
Your Tweets that go out to your 5 gazillion followers fall on deaf ears because they are too busy Tweeting their own messages (which you ignore, much like how they are ignoring yours).
LAMMMEEE!
Now, before I piss of some folks and have them send the Mafia after me, I’ll add that there are folks out there whom I respect and whom I associate with who have bought into this crap-pile-ooza. I hope that it’s their temporary lapse of judgment concerning this matter and I shall not hold it against them… for too long.
Heck, maybe I am way off base here and there IS something of value in all this Twitter non-sense. But until I am proven wrong, I am going by my gut feeling, good senses, and my “Magic 8-Ball”.
Twitter Twitter on the Wall, What’s the Lamest of Them All?
Don’t get suckered, fooled, and ruin this application that is Twitter.

I agree. The problem is some people that want fast easy marketing solutions even if they come at the expense of others.
Your phrase “These folks are the ones who have something they want to shout our to the world, and NOT necessarily looking to listen.” describes clearly the profile of so many people, on twitter and elsewhere. They couldn’t care less about what others have to say, they just want to make sure everyone hears them.
To me this begs a question of how to fix a problem. How can anyone make people in a society behave with more consideration? In a free society this needs to be done by persuading them the choice to broadcast on Twitter ultamitly may Not be in their best interests.
One unique function in Twitter is we can unfollow anybody. While Twitter seems to do quite an adequate job in eliminating active and obvious spammers it is the responsibility of individual users to unfollow those who say things they do not like.
Even though it is generally a good thing to consider it important to contribute usefull, interesting or entertaining posts, people have a right to be as stupid and callous as the may actually be.
I hope these people will grow and learn, and read thoughtful blogs like this one.
Hey Raymond. Thanks for the kind words. I do agree with you for the most part. With that said, twiveaway is 100% completely different… The premise is to GIVE first, and receive as a side benefit. You’re giving to the Twitter community by providing something of value first, and the benefit you receive (i.e. new follower) is a side benefit and result of your giving/teaching/providing/caring. The followers you build through this are loyal because you gave them something of value. You taught them something. You helped solve a problem they had/have, and so on. The mentality here is so much different. You’re building a true relationship with someone this way. Which is what Twitter is all about.
Absolutely Ray! People overlook the fact that Twitter is SO SIMPLE and that down to earth, persistent approaches will pay off tremendously. Everyone’s looking for the miracle grow steroids for their Twitter plant and overlook the fact that proper care, love and dedication will produce a much more fertile and rewarding plant!

p.s. could you maybe email me some insight on the coding/plugin you have on this site that allows people to retweet your post? That would be much appreciated
Nate, it’s a plugin modified by Jim Yaghi, go check it out: Jim Yaghi

From my experience no one is listening to anyone. Just about everyone is trying to sell something, hence the obsession with the procurement of as many followers as possible by any means possible. It seems that most tweets are going out by bot ala tweetlater. I purposely have thrown out a controversial tweet here and there just to see if I could get a rise out of someone but all I heard was crickets. Sometimes I doubt if anyone with a pulse is actually in front of his or her PC. Therefore the self appointed twitter police can yell and scream all they want through their bull horns, but it’s not going to change what twitter is morphing into; a real time marketing tool even if the marketing is falling on deaf ears.
